Director of Civic Affairs

Volunteer Job Overview

The position represents the community association to the larger community including city government organizations, the ward councillor, other associations and the Calgary Federation for matters relevant to the position.  The position is also responsible for planning and development issues impacting our boundaries, applying for and implementing grants including ensuring designs and construction reflect recognized standards. The position fits into the organization by fostering community volunteers to participate in decision making and is accountable to the president and board.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Represent the Organization to the Broader Community - This includes interacting with civic departments, boards and political representatives at various levels for relevant issues.
    Time required for this task: 3 days (1 day = 8 hrs)

  • Chair the Development Review Committee -  Address civic planning and development issues within North Haven.
    Time required for this task: 2 days

  • Apply for and Report on Grants - Research applicable grants that will facilitate various projects within the North Haven Community Association.
    Time required for this task: 4 days

  • Supervise Major Maintenance Contracts - Work with the Building Maintenance Director and other board members to define, design, tender and oversee any contracts for hall maintenance.
    Time required for this task: 5 days

  • Attend Monthly Meeting and Report - (mandatory for this position) Attend the meeting on the second Thursday of each month held at the NHCA Hall.  Report on current grant status, projects and development review issues.
    Time required for this task: 2-3 hrs/month

  • Submit Monthly Report - A monthly summary of current grant status, projects and development review issues should be submitted to the NHCA secretary prior to the start of the meeting.
    Time required for this task: 2-3 hrs/month

OVERALL MONTHLY TIME COMMITMENT

This position requires a significant amount of dedicated time per month.  On average one might spend 12 full 8 hour days in a single month.

TRAINING FOR THE ROLE

Training and orientation will be provided by the predecessor or other board members, as required, per the Volunteer Policy.

Qualifications

  • Proven professional education, knowledge and experience with planning, development, design, construction and project management.
