View a video on CBC about the project.

Nose Hill is a prominent landform in the Calgary area, and one of the City of Calgary’s largest park spaces. While hundreds of citizens pass through the park each week, few are aware of the rich and long-term history of this place.

Roughly 15,000 years ago, Nose Hill stood above Glacial Lake Calgary and it has been visited and inhabited by southern Alberta’s Precontact Indigenous inhabitants for thousands of years.

While 49 recorded archaeological sites are known within Nose Hill Park, this likely only scratches the surface given the limited archaeological study that has occurred here.

In this talk, we explore the long-term history of Nose Hill and discuss excavations conducted within the park at archaeological site EgPm-143, a stone circle site, by the University of Calgary archaeology field school in spring 2024. Further, we discuss the importance and value of public engagement within this excavation program and with the stories of places like Nose Hill.
